What is Medical Qi Gong and How it Can Help You.

Medical Qi Gong

What is Medical Qi Gong? Medical Qi Gong is a gentle type of exercise used to treat specific ailments and symptoms of disease. Recent studies have proven Qi Gong to be effective in treating:

In much the same way that physical therapy uses specially designed exercises for medical purposes, Medical Qi Gong uses specially designed Qi Gong routines to treat disease and medical conditions.

Qi Gong is a Traditional Chinese Medicine

Medical Qi Gong is one of the core forms of medical treatment in Chinese medicine, along with acupuncture and herbal remedies. While any kind of Qi Gong provides numerous benefits to the whole body and mind, medical Qi Gong zeros in on a particular problem. Doctors often prescribe it in China as a primary prescription for disease and ailments.

How Medical Qi Gong Works

Qi Gong uses gentle movements, deep breathing, and a meditative state of mind to keep vital energy, or Qi, flowing throughout the body. Disease and symptoms are a sign that Qi has become obstructed. Medical Qi Gong focuses on clearing these blockages and allowing energy to flow again naturally.

Recent studies show medical Qi Gong is effective in treating disease. These studies conclude that Medical Qi Gong is an effective complementary treatment. In other words, it works well when used in conjunction with medication, diet, education, and all of the other things your doctor may prescribe.

There are two reasons we feel Medical Qi Gong, and specifically our titles, work so well:

Lee Holden has extensive training in traditional Chinese medicine
  • A Qi Gong master with extensive training in traditional Chinese medicine develops our titles. Lee Holden studied in China under Mantak Chia, one of the world's foremost Medical Qi Gong experts.
  • Studies show that any amount of exercise is good for treating disease, and Qi Gong happens to be one of the gentlest and easiest forms of exercise available, making it a feasible option for people of all ages, fitness levels, and of varying medical conditions.

Studies Show Medical Qi Gong Helps

Here are some recent studies that prove Medical Qi Gong works:

Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition that afflicts sufferers with whole-body pain of the bones and muscles, tiredness, difficultly sleeping, and various psychological symptoms such as depression and anxiety.

An August 2010 study in the New England Journal of Medicine found that Qi Gong helped relieve the major symptoms of fibromyalgia. Qi Gong:

  • Significantly reduced chronic pain
  • Improved sleep quality
  • Improved ability to perform physical tasks, such as walking
  • Improved mood and sense of well-being

While exercise is a commonly recommended treatment for fibromyalgia, this study is significant in that it measured the effectiveness of Qi Gong against a control group that performed more traditional stretching exercises. Qi Gong proved more effective. So much so, in fact, those participants required fewer medications to treat their symptoms when following a prescribed course of Qi Gong.

For those suffering from fibromyalgia, we recommend:

Arthritis

Arthritis is a severely debilitating and painful disease. It is a joint disorder that involves joint inflammation. There is no cure for arthritis; treatment consists of physical therapy, exercise, lifestyle changes, and medication to help reduce inflammation.

A large-scale study at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in 2010 measured the effectiveness of Qi Gong in treating various types of arthritis in individuals of all ages. Researchers found individuals practicing Qi Gong showed:

  • Improvement in pain, fatigue, and stiffness
  • Increased sense of well-being
  • Improved reach and balance

For those suffering from arthritis, we recommend:

Immune System

Maintaining a strong immune system is critical for people of all ages. Immune systems become compromised by aging, medication, stress, or other factors.

A study in the Journal of American Geriatrics Society from April 2007 looked at whether Qi Gong strengthened the immune system, specifically against the shingles virus, of which an outbreak may appear when the immune system becomes weak. They found Qi Gong:

  • Significantly strengthened the immune system
  • Improved vitality and mental health

Parkinson's Disease

Parkinson's is a disease of the central nervous system which can include tremors, slowness of movement, stiffness, decline in cognitive ability, and mood disorders. As the disease progresses, balance and difficulty walking becomes a major issue, with falls becoming common, and the accompanying broken bones and injury.

A February 9, 2012 study in The New England Journal of Medicine measured whether Qi Gong was effective in improving stability and balance in patients with Parkinson's disease. They found Qi Gong:

  • Reduces balance impairments in Parkinson's patients
  • Lowered the incidence of falls
  • Improved overall functional capacity

Health care providers encourage exercise in treating Parkinson's, but few programs have been proven effective. In this study, Qi Gong actually outperformed resistance training and stretching.

Diabetes

Diabetes is a metabolic disease where a person has high blood sugar as a result of an insulin resistance or deficiency. All types of diabetes are chronic diseases that cannot be cured, and are treated with medication, support, lifestyle changes, and exercise.

A study published in June 2009 in the Journal of Complementary Medicine measured whether Qi Gong was an effective way to treat diabetes. The researchers found that diabetics who practiced Qi Gong:

  • Showed a greater decline in fasting blood sugar levels
  • Performed more diabetic self-care activities
  • Showed better quality of life, mental health, and vitality

Qi Gong is a sensible exercise option for persons with diabetes because of its gentle nature. The quality of life improvements are especially encouraging.

Depression

Depression is mood disorder that may include feeling sad, anxious, irritable, hopeless, and losing interest in activities once found pleasurable. Medication is often used to treat depression, but many people do not respond fully to medication alone.

A recent study published in the American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry in October of 2011 looked at elderly patients with depression who were partially responding to a typical antidepressant medication. When researchers added Qi Gong to their treatment, patients showed:

  • A greater reduction of depressive symptoms
  • Improvement in physical functioning
  • Improvement in cognitive tests
  • A decline in inflammation throughout the body

Numerous studies have shown that any sort of exercise has a positive impact on mood. Qi Gong as a gentle exercise, with its emphasis on deep breathing and a meditative state of mind, makes it an ideal treatment for mood disorders.

Qi Gong practice helps reduce the symptoms of depression and hypertension.

Hypertension

Hypertension is a medical condition where the blood pressure in the arteries is elevated, requiring the heart to work harder to pump blood throughout the body. High blood pressure is a major risk factor for stroke, heart failure, aneurysms, kidney disease, and an overall shortened life expectancy.

There have been numerous studies into whether Qi Gong is beneficial in treating high blood pressure; a recent review of 26 such medical studies found 85% of them to have been successful in reducing blood pressure.

One study in particular, published in 2003 in the Journal of Alternative Complementary Medicine, look at the effects of Qi Gong on individuals with blood pressure at the high-normal or stage 1 hypertension level. They found Qi Gong:

  • Significantly lowered blood pressure
  • Reduced cholesterol levels
  • Lowered anxiety levels

In addition to dietary changes, medication, and other treatments generally recommended by physicians, Qi Gong could be used as an excellent complementary treatment for high blood pressure.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Chronic fatigue syndrome is a persistent fatigue or tiredness not directly caused by exertion, a lack of sleep, or other medical condition. Additional symptoms can include joint and muscle pain, headaches, digestive problems, and cognitive difficulties.

A recent study presented at the Society of Behavioral Medicine's annual meeting showed Qi Gong can alleviate chronic fatigue symptoms. One hundred and fifty four patients suffering from chronic fatigue syndrome were treated with four hours of group Qi Gong per week, along with a recommended 15-30 minutes of at-home meditation before bed. They found that Qi Gong:

  • Reduced chronic fatigue symptoms by 39%
  • Showed improved mental component scores

While many participants found the suggested Qi Gong regimen to be very time consuming, those that invested the most time showed a much greater reduction in symptoms.

Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is a cancer that starts in the tissues of the breast. It affects 1 in 8 women over the course of a lifetime. Treatments include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and surgery.

A recent study published in the journal Cancer showed that Qi Gong could help improve the quality of life for women receiving cancer radiation therapy. Forty-nine patients receiving therapy also participated in five Qi Gong classes for forty minutes per week. Compared to a control group, the patients receiving Qi Gong:

  • Reported a steady decline in depressive symptom scores
  • Reduced fatigue and instances of sleep disturbances
  • Improved overall quality of life

The study measured results during treatment, and then at one and three month intervals after treatment, and found the benefits to be lasting.
